International CV Format Guide: UK, USA, Canada, Europe & More

United Kingdom

In the UK, the term "CV" is used universally for all professional job applications. UK CV conventions are well-established and consistent across industries. Key norms: one to two pages for most professional roles; no date of birth, nationality, or photo; a professional summary is expected; "References available upon request" is standard; education goes after work experience for experienced professionals. The UK job market is heavily ATS-driven, making keyword optimization and ATS-compatible formatting essential.

United States

In the US, the document is called a "resume." The term "CV" is reserved specifically for academic, research, and medical roles. Key conventions: strictly one page for professionals with under ten years of experience; never include age, photo, marital status, or nationality (Equal Opportunity Employment laws discourage this); very heavy emphasis on quantified accomplishments with numbers and percentages in nearly every bullet point; "References available upon request" is outdated — omit this line entirely.

Canada

Canadian resume conventions are very similar to US standards. One to two pages is accepted. In Quebec and bilingual organizations, French language proficiency may be required or advantageous — specify language proficiency levels clearly using standard frameworks. No photo, age, or marital status. Membership in recognized Canadian professional bodies (e.g. CPA Canada, PEO) is worth highlighting prominently.

Germany

Germany has distinctive CV conventions. A professional photo is still expected on German CVs. Personal details including date of birth, place of birth, nationality, and marital status are traditionally included, though this is slowly changing in international companies. Two pages is standard. German employers frequently request copies of certificates and diplomas as supporting documents — have these ready to attach to your application.

France

A photo is optional but common and generally expected at mid-to-senior levels. Date of birth is commonly included. Applications to French companies should generally be in French unless otherwise specified. French employers place high importance on educational credentials from prestigious institutions. Education often appears before work experience for younger professionals.

Australia

Two to three pages is commonly accepted in Australia. Australian employers often expect two or three professional references listed directly on the CV or a separate reference page submitted with the application. No photo or personal details. Australian professional culture values directness and authenticity — avoid overly formal or pompous language. CVs that are too formal can feel out of place.
